Story
“Tianmen Fox Fairy · Liu Hai the Woodcutter” is adapted from the traditional Hunan flower-drum opera “Liu Hai the Woodcutter”, telling the love story of the woodcutter Liu Hai and a thousand-year white fox spirit across the divide between human and fox. The whole Tianmen Mountain canyon is the stage — mountains as the backdrop, water as the melody, and lighting turning the canyon into a real mythical world. The show uses more than 500 performers and staff, a large panoramic glass-reinforced-plastic stage, naked-eye 3D projection and a surround-sound system, blending Western Hunan folk-song elements with a modern symphony — an extremely powerful aural experience.
Getting to the Venue
Taxi / ride-hailing: the most convenient, about 15–25 minutes from downtown Zhangjiajie at a moderate cost (first choice recommended). By car: the venue has a parking lot; search for “Tianmen Mountain Canyon Grand Theater” in navigation, and set off early to avoid the peak. Tourist shuttle: shuttle lines run from downtown and the Wulingyuan core area.
Return reminder: the show ends around 22:00, when demand for night rides is concentrated; book a ride-hailing car in advance, or start hailing 10 minutes before the show ends, to avoid a long wait.
When to Arrive
Arrive 30–45 minutes before the show starts; the gate opens about 40 minutes before, and you enter by scanning your ID card. On holidays or in peak season (May Day, National Day, summer), arrive 1 hour early to allow for queueing and parking.
Weather & Dress
This is an open canyon performance and the canyon is chilly at night, usually 3–5°C cooler than downtown; even in summer bring a light jacket, and in spring and autumn bring a thicker coat or windbreaker. Light rain does not stop the show and free rain ponchos are provided on site — no need to bring your own. In severe weather such as heavy rain or lightning the show may be cancelled, in which case a full refund or rescheduling will be arranged.
What to bring: original ID document (scan to enter), light jacket/windbreaker, drinking water (allowed), phone charged (to show your order), mosquito repellent (recommended in summer), umbrella (as a backup; ponchos are provided at the venue).
Seating Advice
For a first visit, an Ordinary Seat or Ordinary VIP Seat is recommended — centered, balancing the full view and stage details at good value; for a closer view, upgrade to VIP Zone B or VIP Zone A. Families should prefer aisle seats for easy access with children.
Audience Etiquette
- Please set your phone to silent during the show so as not to disturb other audience members or the sound.
- No flash photography — lighting effects are an important part of the show, and flash ruins the experience.
- The venue is an open canyon; smoking is prohibited throughout.
- Parents bringing children should keep an eye on them; the canyon terrain has steps and slopes, so take care.
- Please do not shout or take calls during the show; leave in an orderly way afterwards and take your litter with you.
