Eat at the summit or downtown?
The summit has simple meals, snacks and drinks, but choice is limited and prices are higher; have your main meals before or after the visit. Travel light and carry bread, chocolate, energy bars and water.
Food at the base and downtown
- In Zhangjiajie downtown try local flavors: Western-Hunan cured meats, Tujia “three-pot” hotpot (sandixiaguo), she-rice and pickled radish;
- Restaurants cluster near the cableway base station — easy to eat right after coming down;
- Local food is spicy; ask for less chili when ordering.
Where to stay
- Near the cableway base station (north of downtown): closest to the entrance, best for the first gondolas;
- Around the railway/bus stations: transport hubs with plenty of options;
- Towards Wulingyuan: convenient if you’ll also visit the Forest Park.
Practical tips
- Book rooms early in peak season; prices rise around holidays;
- The summit is cold and hillside rooms are cooler at night — keep warm;
- With lots of luggage, store it downtown and go up light.
