Eat at the summit or downtown?

The summit has simple meals, snacks and drinks, but choice is limited and prices are higher; have your main meals before or after the visit. Travel light and carry bread, chocolate, energy bars and water.

Food at the base and downtown

  • In Zhangjiajie downtown try local flavors: Western-Hunan cured meats, Tujia “three-pot” hotpot (sandixiaguo), she-rice and pickled radish;
  • Restaurants cluster near the cableway base station — easy to eat right after coming down;
  • Local food is spicy; ask for less chili when ordering.

Where to stay

  • Near the cableway base station (north of downtown): closest to the entrance, best for the first gondolas;
  • Around the railway/bus stations: transport hubs with plenty of options;
  • Towards Wulingyuan: convenient if you’ll also visit the Forest Park.

Practical tips

  • Book rooms early in peak season; prices rise around holidays;
  • The summit is cold and hillside rooms are cooler at night — keep warm;
  • With lots of luggage, store it downtown and go up light.

FAQ

What is the best season to visit Tianmen Mountain?
September–November offers clear skies, high visibility, red leaves and seas of clouds together — the most comfortable; March–May is lovely with blossoms and mist. Summer is cool at the summit but stormy; winter brings rime ice and snow scenes.
What are the differences between Routes A, B and C? Which should I choose?
Route A uses the large cableway up and the express cableway down — the least tiring, best for a first visit; Route B uses the express cableway up and the large cableway down, so you see Tianmen Cave first then the summit, good for avoiding crowds; Route C uses the express cableway both ways with no large cableway at all — the most relaxed. First-time visitors or those with seniors and children should choose A or C.
What is the difference between Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan)?
Tianmen Mountain is defined by Tianmen Cave, the Glass Skywalk, the Heaven-Linking Avenue and the cableway, and can be done in a day; Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan) centres on the sandstone peaks of Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan and Golden Whip Stream, and is large — usually 2–3 days. They differ in style; visit both if time allows.
What should I watch out for in winter?
In winter the summit often has snow and rime ice and can be below 0°C — wear a down jacket and warm, non-slip shoes. Some walkways may close temporarily due to ice; check the park’s notice and the day’s openings before you go.
