Where it’s convenient

  • Around the cableway base: walk to the gate, best for catching the early cableway;
  • Downtown: full amenities and a wide price range;
  • For the “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show, pick a place near the venue.

Prices and pitfalls

  • Peak/off-peak gaps are big — book early for holidays;
  • Check the location is truly near the base, not just labelled “Zhangjiajie”;
  • Prefer free cancellation; read reviews for soundproofing and hot water.

Tips

  • To catch the next morning’s first cableway, stay close to the base;
  • With lots of luggage, store it downtown first.

FAQ

What is the best season to visit Tianmen Mountain?
September–November offers clear skies, high visibility, red leaves and seas of clouds together — the most comfortable; March–May is lovely with blossoms and mist. Summer is cool at the summit but stormy; winter brings rime ice and snow scenes.
Can I visit Tianmen Mountain on a rainy day?
Light rain generally does not affect the visit, but in heavy rain or fog the cableway may be temporarily suspended and the scenic area will issue a notice. We recommend confirming the day’s operating status before you set off. If entry is impossible due to the scenic area’s reasons, a full refund is given.
What time does Tianmen Mountain open?
Tianmen Mountain generally opens from about 07:30 daily; the last cableway time follows the day’s notice. We recommend allowing 5–7 hours (Route A or B), or 6–8 hours for a more relaxed full day. The summit is 5–8°C cooler than downtown, so bring a light jacket even in summer.
Which train station is closest and how do I reach the cableway station?
Zhangjiajie Station (conventional trains) recommended: about 1–2 km from the Tianmen Mountain cableway lower station, a 10–20 minute walk; bus routes 5 or 6 take about 10–15 minutes (CNY 1–2); taxi / ride-hailing about 5 minutes (about CNY 10–15). Zhangjiajie West Station (high-speed rail): about 10 km from the cableway lower station, requiring a transfer; taxi / ride-hailing about 20–30 minutes (about CNY 30–40); bus 17 takes about 40–60 minutes.
