See the falls, and the culture
Anshun, where Huangguoshu lies, is home to many ethnic groups; the Bouyei and others have lived among this karst landscape for generations, forming distinctive architecture, dress and festivals. Adding culture gives the trip more depth.
Stone architecture and villages
Many local Bouyei villages are built of stone; houses follow the slope in tiers, of wood and stone, warm in winter and cool in summer — hence the name "stone kingdom." Wandering the stone walls and lanes, life and texture are everywhere.
Wax-resist dyeing and dress
Traditional Bouyei dress is mainly blue and white, with distinctive headwear and pleated skirts. Wax-resist dyeing is an important local craft: beeswax resists the dye and indigo soaks in, giving age-old patterns. Some villages let visitors try their hand, and you can buy distinctive handmade pieces.
Festivals such as "Sixth of the Sixth"
The Sixth of the Sixth (6th day of the 6th lunar month) is a major Bouyei festival: people dress up, sing and dance, and visit friends, filling the countryside with life. If your trip falls on a festival, you can sense the rich ethnic flavour up close.
