How to split two days

  • Day 1 — Tianmen Mountain: up from the downtown cableway base, walk the glass skywalk, Guigu Cliff Walk and Tianmen Cave, return the same day; see the “Tianmen Fox Fairy” show at night;
  • Day 2 — Wulingyuan: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — Yuanjiajie (the inspiration for “Avatar’s” scenery), Tianzishan and Golden Whip Stream.

Connections and where to stay

  • The two are about 30–40 km apart, roughly a one-hour drive;
  • On Day 1 stay downtown (near the cableway) or in Wulingyuan, depending on Day 2;
  • If both days are in the Forest Park, stay near the Wulingyuan entrance.

Tickets and booking

  • Tianmen Mountain and the Forest Park are ticketed separately with separate real-name bookings;
  • Forest Park tickets are usually valid for several days — check the notice;
  • Book several days ahead in peak season.

Time-saving tips

  • Start early each day to avoid group peaks;
  • The Forest Park is large — use shuttle buses and cableways/lifts to save energy.

FAQ

What is the difference between Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan)?
Tianmen Mountain is defined by Tianmen Cave, the Glass Skywalk, the Heaven-Linking Avenue and the cableway, and can be done in a day; Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan) centres on the sandstone peaks of Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan and Golden Whip Stream, and is large — usually 2–3 days. They differ in style; visit both if time allows.
Which train station is closest and how do I reach the cableway station?
Zhangjiajie Station (conventional trains) recommended: about 1–2 km from the Tianmen Mountain cableway lower station, a 10–20 minute walk; bus routes 5 or 6 take about 10–15 minutes (CNY 1–2); taxi / ride-hailing about 5 minutes (about CNY 10–15). Zhangjiajie West Station (high-speed rail): about 10 km from the cableway lower station, requiring a transfer; taxi / ride-hailing about 20–30 minutes (about CNY 30–40); bus 17 takes about 40–60 minutes.
How do I get to Tianmen Mountain from the airport?
Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (code DYG) is about 5–6 km from the Tianmen Mountain cableway lower station. Taxi / ride-hailing takes about 15–20 minutes (about CNY 15–30); bus 4 takes about 20–30 minutes (CNY 1–2); some hotels and B&Bs offer airport pickup. Insist on the meter for taxis and prefer ride-hailing.
How do I get to Tianmen Mountain? Is it far from downtown Zhangjiajie?
The Tianmen Mountain cableway base station is in downtown Zhangjiajie, close to the railway and bus stations — easy by taxi or bus. Drivers can navigate to the base-station car park.
