Reading karst: how stone forests, caves and underground rivers form - Huangguoshu Waterfall, Guizhou

Anshun, home to Huangguoshu and Longgong, is one of the areas where karst landforms are most fully and densely displayed. Soluble limestone, dissolved and eroded by water over ages, gradually shapes stone forests, peak clusters, gorges, caves and underground rivers.

Surface water seeps into rock fissures and dissolves them into caves and subterranean rivers; dripping inside deposits stalactites and stalagmites; on the surface, stone buds, stone forests and peak clusters are common. The stone forest of Tianxingqiao and the underground river and water cave of Longgong are vivid examples. Walk them as a geology textbook you can enter — and protect them: do not chip, climb or remove rock samples.
