What to see at Tianmen Cave

Tianmen Cave is one of the world’s highest natural caves that go through a mountain: 131.5 m high and 57 m wide, like a gateway to the heavens. The plaza at the mouth is the best place to view and photograph it.

Getting up the 999 stairs

  • The staircase has 999 steps and is fairly steep; normal fitness takes about 20–40 minutes;
  • To save effort, ride the through-mountain escalator (included in the ticket) up to the cave area and enjoy the plaza view;
  • If you tire easily or have children/seniors with you, take the escalator both ways and shoot from the plaza.

Stair-climbing tips

  • Wear non-slip sports shoes, hold the handrail and rest on the landings;
  • It’s windy and chilly — bring a jacket;
  • Early morning and late afternoon are quieter with better light for photos.

Getting better photos

  • From the plaza, shoot up with a wide lens to fit the stairs and the arch together;
  • Use the arch as a natural frame around distant peaks and clouds;
  • Sunbeams on clear days and mist after rain add depth and story.

FAQ

What is the best season to visit Tianmen Mountain?
September–November offers clear skies, high visibility, red leaves and seas of clouds together — the most comfortable; March–May is lovely with blossoms and mist. Summer is cool at the summit but stormy; winter brings rime ice and snow scenes.
How long do the stairs take and is there an escalator?
The 999 steps are steep; normal fitness takes about 20–40 minutes. If you tire easily or have children/seniors, ride the through-mountain escalator to the cave area and shoot from the plaza. Wear non-slip shoes, hold the handrail and rest midway.
Can I visit Tianmen Mountain on a rainy day?
Light rain generally does not affect the visit, but in heavy rain or fog the cableway may be temporarily suspended and the scenic area will issue a notice. We recommend confirming the day’s operating status before you set off. If entry is impossible due to the scenic area’s reasons, a full refund is given.
What time does Tianmen Mountain open?
Tianmen Mountain generally opens from about 07:30 daily; the last cableway time follows the day’s notice. We recommend allowing 5–7 hours (Route A or B), or 6–8 hours for a more relaxed full day. The summit is 5–8°C cooler than downtown, so bring a light jacket even in summer.
