The great Huangguoshu fall drops far and carries much water; the torrent smashes into the pool and throws up a cloud of droplets, bathing the area in mist year-round. In high water the spray even reaches the street above the fall, so you walk with an umbrella on a clear day — the origin of “silver rain on the golden street.”
On clear mornings into the afternoon, sunlight slants through the spray and often forms a rainbow before the fall or over the pool — sometimes more than one. To catch it, pick a day of full water and bright sun and wait at the deck straight ahead or the Water Curtain Cave windows, framing rainbow, curtain and cascade together.
