Why visit Huangguoshu

Huangguoshu Waterfall sits in Zhenning Buyi and Miao Autonomous County, Anshun, Guizhou — a landmark of Guizhou tourism. The main waterfall is about 101 m wide and 77.8 m high; its mighty flow thunders through the valley and has earned it the name “Asia’s Largest Waterfall.” Behind it hides the roughly 134 m-long Water Curtain Cave, which lets you walk “through” the falls — a rare chance to view a waterfall from inside.

“Huangguoshu” is in fact a group of waterfalls: besides the main falls, there are Doupotang Waterfall upstream, the Tianxingqiao (Star Bridge) area downstream, and Dishuitan Waterfall, forming a richly layered karst waterfall landscape.

Highlights

  • Huangguoshu Waterfall: the main attraction, about 101 m wide and 77.8 m high — spectacular when in full flow;
  • Water Curtain Cave: a natural cave behind the falls’ left side, letting you pass behind the water — a unique experience;
  • Doupotang Waterfall: a broad waterfall upstream, its roar like thunder — the widest in the group;
  • Tianxingqiao Scenic Area: a karst water-and-stone forest where rock, tree and water interweave — a very different style; bought separately or via a combo ticket.

How to plan

The core area usually takes a full day: visit Tianxingqiao in the morning, Huangguoshu Waterfall and the Water Curtain Cave in the afternoon, then Doupotang if time and energy allow. Shuttle buses link the sights; in peak season arrive early and book ahead.

FAQ

How tall is Huangguoshu? How long is the Water Curtain Cave?
The great fall is about 77.8 m high and 101 m wide, the heart of the group. The Water Curtain Cave sits about 40–47 m up the fall, some 134 m long, with several windows, running behind the water. Its form varies with the flow; the wet season brings the greatest volume and power.
How many falls are in the Huangguoshu group and which?
The group has eighteen falls of varied character, including Huangguoshu, Doupotang, Silver-chain Falling Pool, Luositang, Xingxia flying fall, Dishuitan, Liantian, Chongkeng, Guanjiaoxia, Luoye, Dashuyan, Zhizhuyan, Lvmeitan, Xiagua, Lintan, Longmen flying fall, Sanchawan and Tiaoshuihe; the main developed ones are Huangguoshu, Doupotang, Silver-chain Falling Pool, Xingxia flying fall and Longmen flying fall.
Can I cover Huangguoshu, Tianxingqiao and Doupotang in one day?
Yes, with good planning. A time-saving order is usually Doupotang → Tianxingqiao → the main fall; the main fall is the highlight, so give it ample time. For a deeper Tianxingqiao visit or to add the night tour and nearby spots, allow two days for a calmer experience.
Does the Water Curtain Cave need a separate ticket?
No, the Water Curtain Cave is included in the admission ticket. It is misty inside with slippery surfaces, so wear a raincoat and non-slip shoes.
