A large waterfall family
Centred on the great Huangguoshu fall (77.8 m high, 101 m wide), the scenic area holds falls of many characters, forming a large family. Average elevation is about 900 m, the area covers 163 sq km, the air is fresh — long called a natural oxygen bar.
Who the eighteen are
Public sources list Huangguoshu, Doupotang, Silver-chain Falling Pool, Luositang, Xingxia flying fall, Dishuitan, Liantian, Chongkeng, Guanjiaoxia, Luoye, Dashuyan, Zhizhuyan, Lvmeitan, Xiagua, Lintan, Longmen flying fall, Sanchawan and Tiaoshuihe falls — an impressive array.
The five that are developed
The main developed falls number five: Huangguoshu, Doupotang, Silver-chain Falling Pool, Xingxia flying fall and Longmen flying fall; the rest remain largely undeveloped, scattered across the landscape and around the area, waiting to be better known.
Each has its own appeal
- Huangguoshu — 77.8 m high, 101 m wide, one of the world's famous large falls, viewable from many angles;
- Doupotang — 105 m wide at the crest, the widest-crested “roaring fall” of the family;
- Silver-chain Falling Pool — funnel-shaped and chain-like, on the lower half of Tianxingqiao;
- Dishuitan — about 8 km west of the great fall, some 410 m in total height, the family's “tall one”;
- Longmen flying fall — water bursting from a cave mouth, a signature sight around Longgong.
How many falls are in the Huangguoshu group and which?
The group has eighteen falls of varied character, including Huangguoshu, Doupotang, Silver-chain Falling Pool, Luositang, Xingxia flying fall, Dishuitan, Liantian, Chongkeng, Guanjiaoxia, Luoye, Dashuyan, Zhizhuyan, Lvmeitan, Xiagua, Lintan, Longmen flying fall, Sanchawan and Tiaoshuihe; the main developed ones are Huangguoshu, Doupotang, Silver-chain Falling Pool, Xingxia flying fall and Longmen flying fall.
Can I cover Huangguoshu, Tianxingqiao and Doupotang in one day?
Yes, with good planning. A time-saving order is usually Doupotang → Tianxingqiao → the main fall; the main fall is the highlight, so give it ample time. For a deeper Tianxingqiao visit or to add the night tour and nearby spots, allow two days for a calmer experience.
Is Doupotang Waterfall worth a special visit?
Yes. Doupotang has the widest crest in the group, broad and gentle, plus its unique “roaring fall” trait and a classic-TV filming memory. It is usually linked with the main fall and Tianxingqiao, taking about 40 minutes to an hour — easy to fit in. The wet season gives the best sound and power.

The great fall is about 77.8 m high and 101 m wide, the heart of the group. The Water Curtain Cave sits about 40–47 m up the fall, some 134 m long, with several windows, running behind the water. Its form varies with the flow; the wet season brings the greatest volume and power.
