Climate

Huangguoshu has a subtropical climate — neither scorching in summer nor freezing in winter — but it is very humid, and mist hangs around the falls year-round. The rainy season (May–September) brings concentrated rain; check the day’s forecast before you go.

Spring

Wet and humid, cool in the mornings and evenings. Bring rain gear, a light jacket and non-slip shoes.

Summer

  • Cool and rainy — the fullest flow and most spectacular falls, but also the season you are most likely to be soaked by mist;
  • Bring a raincoat (more practical than an umbrella), quick-dry clothing and non-slip shoes.

Autumn

Clear and crisp with moderate flow — a comfortable season for photos and viewing. Day–night temperature swings are larger, so keep a jacket handy.

Winter

  • Cold with fewer visitors and lower flow, giving the falls a different charm;
  • The cave is slippery — stay warm and mind your footing.

What to bring

  • Original ID card (real-name entry);
  • A raincoat or waterproof jacket (essential for the Water Curtain Cave);
  • Non-slip shoes, a waterproof phone pouch and plenty of water.

FAQ

What should I watch for visiting in the wet season?
In the wet season the water is abundant and the views spectacular, but the decks at the foot of the fall and the Water Curtain Cave get you wet more easily — bring rain gear and wear non-slip shoes. Water conditions change fast and some waterside or cliff-side areas may open or close temporarily; follow on-site notices and staff guidance, and keep yourself and belongings safe.
Should I bring a raincoat? Does the area provide one?
Spray is heavy when viewing the fall, especially at the Water Curtain Cave and close to it, so bring your own raincoat or umbrella. In extreme weather such as storms or strong wind, the area may hand out raincoats; day to day, still carry rain gear and keep phones and cameras dry.
How do I get to Huangguoshu from Guiyang or Anshun?
Take high-speed rail or drive toward Anshun, then transfer to the site: Huangguoshu is about 128 km from Guiyang and 45 km from Anshun. Rail, air and expressway all reach the Anshun area; then transfer. See the transport guide under “Travel Guides.”
How should I choose lodging around Huangguoshu?
Around the site is closest to the entrances for early starts; Huangguoshu town has concentrated dining and shopping with good value; Anshun city has the most choice and amenities but a longer commute. Peak season tightens supply — book early and confirm transport.
