Why the spray is so heavy

The great fall drops far and carries much water; the torrent smashes into Rhino Pool and throws up a cloud of droplets, bathing the area in mist year-round. In high water the spray reaches the street above the fall, so even on a clear day you walk with an umbrella — the origin of the name “silver rain on the golden street.”

When rainbows appear

On clear mornings into the afternoon, sunlight slants through the spray and often forms a rainbow before the fall or over the pool — sometimes more than one. It is most likely with full water and bright sun, a moment many visitors never forget.

Where it looks best

  • The viewing deck straight ahead of the great fall: the flow and rainbow face-on, with a wide view;
  • The Water Curtain Cave windows: from inside the fall, spray, rainbow and cascade in one frame;
  • The poolside beneath the fall: spray in your face, the roar and coolness up close.

Shooting tips

  • Time: on clear days from morning to afternoon in back- or side-light, rainbows are easier to catch;
  • Gear: with heavy spray, protect the lens and wipe it often;
  • Composition: bring the rainbow, the curtain and the onlookers into the frame for a livelier shot.

FAQ

When can I see a rainbow at Huangguoshu?
On clear mornings into the afternoon, sunlight through the spray often forms a rainbow before the fall or over the pool — most likely with full water and bright sun. Wait at the deck straight ahead or the Water Curtain Cave windows and frame rainbow, curtain and cascade together.
Should I bring a raincoat? Does the area provide one?
Spray is heavy when viewing the fall, especially at the Water Curtain Cave and close to it, so bring your own raincoat or umbrella. In extreme weather such as storms or strong wind, the area may hand out raincoats; day to day, still carry rain gear and keep phones and cameras dry.
When is the water at its fullest?
Roughly May to October, rain brings the high-water period with abundant, powerful flow; the medium period is stable and comfortable; the low period has less water but reveals the fall’s structure and rock texture. Each has its own appeal.
When is the Bouyei “Sixth of the Sixth”?
The “Sixth of the Sixth” is the 6th day of the 6th lunar month, a major Bouyei festival with dressing up, singing, dancing and visiting friends. Its date follows the lunar calendar and is not fixed in the Gregorian one; if your trip coincides, join in while respecting local customs.
